The Voice of Truth

My last post was about listening to God and I am going to do a short series on this topic because I think it is something hard for us to do, but vital to our faith. God’s voice is the voice of truth in our lives and we need to be sure we listen to what He has to say to us. The world can be a pretty negative place with constant judgment, criticism and competition. Do you listen to what the world has to say about who you are or what God has to say about who you are?

Casting Crowns has an amazing song called “The Voice of Truth”. Its lyrics really sum up why it is important for us to listen to His voice.

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of faith it takes to climb out of this boat I’m in
Onto the crashing wavesTo step out of my comfort zone
To the realm of the unknown where Jesus is
And He’s holding out his hand

God wants us to have the kind of faith that empowers us and gives us the courage to step out of our comfort zones. When we do, He is there holding out His hand. We know that we cannot do it on our own and we can only do it through the power of His Holy Spirit working in and through us. It is out of our comfort zones that we rely on Him more and are able to see Him working in us and our circumstances.
But the waves are calling out my name and they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times I’ve tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me
Time and time again. ‘Boy, you’ll never win!’
“You’ll never win”
The enemy wants us to remember and be reminded of every time we have failed to do something. The world tells us we have failed, we aren’t good enough and wants us to compare ourselves to others and be reminded of our mistakes; to paralyze us with fear. But the voice of truth tells me a different story
And the voice of truth says “Do not be afraid!”
And the voice of truth says “This is for My glory”
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

However, God tells us something so different. He tells us to not be afraid. He wants us to be bold and step out in faith so He can step in and then we, who are ordinary, are able to do extraordinary things through Him. Which voice are you listening to? Are you listening to the voice that has you afraid and is reminding you of your failures and mistakes or are you listening to the voice of truth?
Oh what I would do to have
The kind of strength it takes to stand before a giant
With just a Sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors
Shaking in their armor
Wishing they’d have had the strength to stand
Do you want to have the kind of courage David had when he faced Goliath? Do you remember where his courage came from? It came from his amazing faith in God. 1 Samuel 17:37 David said, “ The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” David knew it was God who would save him from Goliath. He did not fear, he had faith and trusted in the Lord.
But the giant’s calling out my name and he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times I’ve tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me
Time and time again “boy, you’ll never win!
“You’ll never win”
Those around David didn’t have the kind of faith he had. They were only going by what they could see, a young boy facing a giant with a sling and a stone, but David had faith. He listened to the voice of truth and not the voices of those around him.
But the stone was just the right size
To put the giant on the ground
And the waves they don’t seem so high
From on top of them looking down
I will soar with the wings of eagles
When I stop and listen to the sound of Jesus
Singing over me
David stepped out in faith and God stepped in. David faced the giant and won. God was glorified and David and the Israelites were blessed because of his faith and his choice to listen to the voice of truth.I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

The choice is yours. Who will you choose to listen to today – the voices around you or the voice of truth?

  1. This was wonderful to read! I just stepped out of my comfort zone yesterday…boy, was it nerve-wracking…but I did it! To read this today was a confirmation to me…I don’t always understand the whys and the what-fors, but stepping out in faith and then reading a post like this today, let’s me know that God is leading me. And yes…I faced all those awful voices in my head mentioned in the song. Jesus is faithful! We are to be overcomers and our strength is in Him! Thank you for sharing this!

    • Shadowlillies, how awesome that you were courageous enough to step out in faith. Just like the priests crossing the Jordan had to step out before the water receded, we often have to step out in faith before God can step in. Keep listening to Him and following Him!

  2. I also like Casting Crowns very much… they are not the typical ccm band… the have a Christ centered message in most of their lyrics, and it is actually amazing they got so popular with this kind of message. Usually bands who focus on Christ are not that popular.

  3. Thanks for reading my blog entry My “word” for the year. Happy to find you. What a wonderful blog you have. Blessings, Nikki
