Deeply Rooted in the Word of God

Paul addresses the importance of knowing the Word of God so the body of Christ can recognize false teaching.

Ephesians 4:14

14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

Paul is now addressing the spiritual maturity of the church. He wants them to be deeply rooted in their faith so they won’t be easily influenced by the world. If they are not deeply rooted, they will be easily swayed. The analogy Paul uses is being “tossed back and forth by the waves”. When you think about something being tossed by the waves, it is total at the whim of the waves. It will go wherever the waves take it. Paul wants the people to go wherever the Lord leads them and not the world.

One of the ways we can fall prey to the ways of the world is to be susceptible to false teaching. There is a lot of misinformation out in the world about Christianity and how to walk by faith. We may be swayed by some of this teaching if we do not know what the Word of God says for ourselves. We need to read and study the Bible for ourselves so we can recognize the truth from a lie or a distortion.

For example, how many of you have heard the saying “God helps those who help themselves”? That is a saying that attributes something to God that is not found anywhere in Scripture. In fact, Scripture teaches us just the opposite. God helps those who love Him.

Psalm 109:21

But you, Sovereign Lord,
    help me for your name’s sake;
    out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.

How well do you know the Word of God? Do you think you can recognize the truth from Scripture from a lie or a distortion? I highly recommend you start a Bible reading plan. There are a lot available online to help you read the Bible on your time table. The important thing is to read and study it for yourself!
