Living Sacrifice

Romans 12:1

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

According to Merriam-Webster, there are three definitions for the word surrender:

  • to agree to stop fighting, hiding, resisting, etc., because you know that you will not win or succeed
  • to give the control or use of (something) to someone else
  • to allow something (such as a habit or desire) to influence or control you

Part of our sanctification process, becoming more Christ-like ,requires surrender. It is a surrendering of our old ways of the flesh for the new ways of the Spirit. It is surrendering our will for His, our desires for His, our plans for His.

Ephesians 5:16

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

In looking at what we are to surrender in light of the definition, we agree to stop fighting with the Lord’s desires, will and plans for our lives because we know we cannot succeed without Him. We need the empowerment of His Spirit working in and through us if we are going to live the lives He created us to live.

Surrender means giving up control to the Lord. This may be the hardest part for us because we like to be in control. This surrendering to the Lord is so we can allow His spirit to influence our thoughts, words and actions.

Surrendering our lives to the Lord isn’t a one time thing, it is something we have to do minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day. It is a choice to follow His way our our own. Will you continually surrender yourself to the Lord? Imagine the victories and success you might experience in all aspects of your life if you were ruled and empowered by the Lord rather than yourself!

  1. Wow! Thanks Shelly for letting God speak through you again today. This is exactly what the Lord is lovingly disciplining me on at the moment! 🙂

  2. Reblogged this on iChristian and commented:
    Your Spiritual Worship!

  3. in those times, there were few hidden truths, no hidden truth is everywhere, using your body today means speaking up for injustices and informing people of the truth, amen

    • Bwcarey, being living sacrifices means being willing to do whatever God calls us to do. Speaking up for those who don’t have voices would be one way to serve the Lord. be blessed!

  4. Sis Shelly, just a bit thought about surrender to God. One of the important aspect in Christian is have Faith in God. And faith is the result of surrender. .:) So blessed I am read your post this evening. .miss so much read your great post. Thank you. Blessings.

  5. Yes, Shelly, a good reminder surrender isn’t just a one-time thing, daily, seasonally, we find ourselves at that place. Peolpe may measure their relationship with God as being on levels, or depths; but wiht God we are either all-in, or resistent to His complete control!

    God bless!

    • Cheryl – couldn’t agree with you more! It isn’t about being on a certain level with the Lord but being all in and not resistant. Blessings!

  6. Surrender is a conscious and continual choice. I have learned the less control I have, the better. Often we won’t aggressively give ourselves over to God because we still desire to have things “our way.” But with maturity you increasingly and quickly realize it is God’s way or no way. Nothing good is going to happen out of His will. Unfortunately many people don’t recognize the freedom (from worry, burdens and self-sufficiency) surrender truly offers.

I had been off the blogging radar for a bit. Thanks for stopping by earlier!

    • Lilka, when we surrender, we experience the freedom of following the Lord and what a blessing it is! Love your statement ‘surrender is a conscious and continual choice”.

  7. I agree with Steve. This is right where I am at in my spiritual walk. In fact, my husband and I are participating in a study on walking with Jesus, and it’s all about surrender. Thanks Shelly.

    • Sue, it is something apparently the Lord is teaching a lot of us. It is a minute by minute struggle but so worth it when we can finally surrender it all to Him. Blessings!

  8. Shelly, I’m a first time visitor and glad I found you. Surrender is a daily . . . maybe a moment by moment decision. I can so relate to Paul’s words, “The good that I would I do not…” I spend time each morning praying to completely surrender and then fail so many times throughout the day. I will now add a reminder to stop fighting with the Lord’s desires for me. Thank you!

    • Deb, Paul’s words came to my mind as I was writing this post as well. Surrendering is something we will never master but have to continually and intentionally do. Be blessed!
