Spring Cleaning

Spring is the time for fresh starts and new growth. It is a time when many of us do some spring cleaning, a deep cleaning in our homes. It includes cleaning out drawers and closets and getting rid of things we no longer use or need; things that are cluttering up our homes.

How about doing something similar in our spiritual lives? Are there things in our lives we need to get rid of in order to serve the Lord more wholeheartedly? Are there sins in our lives that we have been justifying, rationalizing or ignoring?

Colossians 3:8

But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

As you look at your life and the things you value, do you have idols you need to rid yourself of? An idol is “an object of extreme devotion” (www.merriam-webster.com). What are you extremely devoted to? Is it a hobby, a sport, a TV show, time on your computer, another person, your volunteering or your job?

Ezekiel 20:7

And I said to them, “Each of you, get rid of the vile images you have set your eyes on, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

Since our idols today aren’t vile images, we tend to not recognize them as idols. However, the things we make idols today aren’t necessarily inherently bad, such as volunteering, but if we are excessively devoted to it and it takes time away from the Lord, it is an idol.

Let’s do a little spring cleaning in our spiritual lives and rid ourselves of anything that is distracting or drawing us away from the Lord. Just as we reorganize drawers, closets and rooms in our homes, we can reorganize our time so we have more time to spend with the Lord and He can help change our hearts and draw us closer to Himself.

Ezekiel 18:31

Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit.

Just as we feel lighter and better when we do spring cleaning in our homes, we will feel more love, joy and peace if we do a little spring cleaning in our spiritual lives.

    • Karina, spring cleaning should be for more than our homes, it should include our spiritual lives. The changes we make in our spiritual lives will have much more impact than any change we make in our homes. Be blessed!

  3. Hi Shelly,

Thanks for the reminder. It’s usually that thing in our lives that we rationalize with long explanations when challenges are made to our “idol.” How wonderful when that attachment is set free.

    Love and blessings, Bernadette

    • Bernadette, so true! Paying attention to what we have to use long explanations for might just reveal some of our idols. Be blessed!

  4. I love this post. It’s a daily spiritual cleaning we must do – as part of the sanctification process (another of your posts.) Thanks.

    • Julie, daily spiritual cleaning is a must, but often we find ourselves busy with other things and need a deep spiritual cleaning to get back on track. Be blessed!
